The Golf Course - Bliss Hotel Southport Golf Holidays
Hesketh golf club has enjoyed a rich history being the oldest golf club in the Southport area. Originally designed by James Ogilvy Fairlie Morris in 1885 and known as Southport golf club. The club has changed land several times before eventually resettling on the original plot with the holes around the clubhouse representing the core design. The course was renovated by Hawtree Design in the early 2000’s to modernise the layout and become the course we know today. Hesketh can be seen as part links and part parkland with some of the course playing through tall sand dunes and some of the course being played across flatter terrain. Henry Cotton described the par 3, 16th hole as the best short hole in Lancashire. An 18 hole, par 72 course that measure 6,712 yards from the white tees and has played host for the final qualifying stages of the Open Championship.
Formby Ladies golf club is rather unique in its setting as it is essentially a course within a course on the Formby golf club estate. Situated inside the mens course which runs around the periphery of the ladies course. It is a ladies only members club which also has its own clubhouse, though it does accept visitors of all genders. Originally founded as a 9 hole course in 1986 though there is no official record of the architect due to an unfortunate fire at Formby golf club but it is thought to have been the resident professional William McEwan. The course was then extended to make a full 18 hole course in 1907 designed by Douglas McEwan. Set amongst coastal sand dunes and tall pine trees you will find tight fairways, heather in the rough and small well protected greens. Course management is essential to navigate the obstacles in your path as it is not a course designed for the big hitters. An 18 hole links course which is a par 71 for women and a par 66 for men that measures 5,356 yards and is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Greg Norman described the course as beautiful and that it does not need to be over 7,000 yards to be formidable.
Formby Hall is home to the 18 hole Championship Old course and the 9 hole Woodhey course. The Old course is a challenge for players of all levels being a par 72 and measuring around 6.500 yards from the yellow tees. The grass is tightly nit which provides a consistently above average playing surface. The course is well designed with plenty of character with links style pot bunkers, lots of mature wooded areas and a selection of water hazards. The Old course has hosted the European Seniors Tournaments, European Challenge Tour 3 years on the run and the European Pro Tours.
